Optical and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction showed that a 2500 year old Pinus halepensis, found in a copper mine in Cyprus, contained approximately three-millimeter copper pellets, distributed as islets. The wood tissue, also impregnated with copper, showed no signs of deterioration; however, at the sites of the large metal pellets, the cells were decomposing.
