Niello is a black material composed of one or more metal sulfides. This document includes the x-ray diffraction analyses of niello from 180 objects spanning the period between the first century AD and the present, from Europe and the Middle and Far East. It is shown that the composition of niello varies with the period, the type of metal decorated, and the place. -- AATA
