A chronological review from birth (1568) to demise (1980) of copper smelting at Swansea on the South Wales coast in the United Kingdom is presented. Topics discussed are ore purchasing methods; terms for leasing, including a sample lease writ, smelting companies from big land owners; a copy of the flow sheri for Welsh copper smelting process developed in 1811. Strategies used to combat the copper smoke nuisance -- gaseous releases containing mainly SO₂ and AS₂O₃ -- from the smelters at Tawe since 1717 are addressed. Evolution of the methods for producing sulfuric acid from sulfur dioxide emissions and the subsequent use of sulfuric acid in the production of other chemicals, such as hydrochloric acid, copper sulfate, etc., and the manufacture and uses of other alloys at the various copper smelters are also discussed.
