Rewiring can be an important component of a preservation job since existing wiring often has deteriorated and poses fire hazards and/or does not meet modern code requirements or present electrical load needs. Selection of the replacement/upgrading system for historic structures should involve not only cost and cost/use considerations, but also an assessment of whether installation of the system will avoid damage or destruction of interior surface finishes. Careful attention also should be given to the lighting fixtures so that they are appropriate for the period lighting scheme being recreated in a restored building or are compatible with lighting requirements and interiors in a recycled structure.
