A 19th century private home, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion was acquired by the city of Norwalk, Connecticut, in the 1940's. Little attention, however, was then paid to its maintenance. A turning point occurred in the late 1950's-early 1960's when citizens prevented the building's razing and a restoration program was begun. This project, being carried out in several stages as funds become available, has already revitalized the structure, conserved many of its important decorative elements, and reconstructed a destroyed conservatory. Details of this work are described.
