Abstract
Water-sensitive modern dyes used for writing or marking on records can be transferred into a water-proof condition by use of ionic fixatives. Thus, aqueous restoration techniques like washing or resizing can be applied even on documents with large areas of modern inks, stamps or copying-ink pencils. The volatile fixative cyclododecane is used for local water-protection of small endangered areas. The application of the fixatives Rewin EL, Mesiton NBS, and cyclododecane is described at the example of the conservation of a complex 20th century record, thereby avoiding any diffusion of a multitude of different inks and colours found on every single sheet of paper.
