Good storage conditions for artworks on paper are discussed. The topics studied include the following: relative humidity and temperature; light level, with darkness being an optimum condition; air quality, with the damaging effect of pollutants, dust, and soot; problem of mold, fungi, and bacteria nature of storage materials such as boxes, shelving, and wire racks; quality of matting, hinges, and slip sheets; and alternatives to matting. A list of safe storage materials includes rag board, acid-free paper and board, glassine, inert plastic (such as polyester film and acrylic sheeting), Japanese paper (100% Kozo), and purified starch paste.
