There is some confusion about the interpretation and translation of the Dutch color name <i>schulpwit</i> (schelpwit, schilpwit) as it has been used in the 17th century. Some interpret it as white from crushed egg shells or a gradation of lead white. Others assume it to be pure lead white. In a Dutch tract on colors from the 17th century, written by the Dutchman Eikelenberg, an account is given on the manufacture of lead white in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), including an explanation of the term <i>schulpwit</i>. Based on this account <i>schulpwit</i> should be translated as flake white, being related to the production of the color in rolls or <i>schulpen</i>.
