Abstract
An approach for regional modeling of archaeological site locations is presented based on computer processing techniques applied to digital elevation data. Elevation data in a fixed grid format and covering large areas can be obtained from the National Cartographic Information Center. Standard computer processing techniques can be applied to these data to derive secondary terrain information that are related to the location of sites, such as slope, aspect, a relief measure, vantage locations, and a view quality measure. These data, coupled with stream location data and probabilistic classification functions, can be used to model the locations of archaeological sites with an acceptable level of accuracy. An example application is given for a 50 square kilometer region near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. -- AATA
