Abstract
A portable system for x-ray fluorescence spectography in the field was used on the UCLA-Israel Archaeological Expedition (1968). A radioactive source such as <sup>241</sup>Am or <sup>125</sup>I is used to excite K x-rays of a selected target material, which in turn excite characteristic rays from the sample. Over 300 separate analyses of metals, glasses, glazed ceramic and mineral specimens were obtained. Results are semi-quantitative, with accuracy of 10-20% when elements are present in 0.1-30% range. The method is fast, precise, economical and non-destructive.
