The history of production and use of smalt is described. Using old prescriptions and original experiments, smalts with different contents of K, Si and Co were prepared and their microscopical and physical properties were deduced. The methods to detect smalt on paintings are explained. Paint-technological properties and the use of smalt for different techniques are illustrated. -- AATA
