Abstract
Organic silicon compounds are known for their excellent water-repellent and release properties. Impregnating wood with oligomer siloxanes results in products with improved dimensional stability after drying. Silicon derivatives can be easily bound to cellulosic materials by radiation treatment, known as electron-beam-curing (EBC). The authors performed a series of experiments to study the potential of this method. They found that silicon acrylate can easily be polymerized in wood by gamma irradiation. The composite material obtained can be considered silicon-grafted wood. The silicon grafting modifies the water absorption properties of the wood, though the composite material obtained this way is far from being water-repellent. -- AATA
