Abstract
A record of the earth's magnetic field intensity is fixed in baked clay as it cools from heating. Investigation of this magnetization by the use of a cryogenic SQUID magnetometer can elicit information about the way that field intensity has changed with time. The examination of reference material is described which indicates a steady rise in intensity for the middle 500 years of the second millenium BC for Cyprus, Egypt, Israel and Mesopotamia. Some applications are discussed. -- AATA
