Abstract
A review is presented of the symposia - Identifying Antiques by Spectrochemcial Techniques - held during the Pittsburgh Conference and Exposition on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Science in February, 1988. FTIR studies of paint samples from Byzantine illuminated manuscripts are briefly discussed as well as the use of thermoluminescence techniques to date pottery and other inorganic art objects. Research using the SEM and other techniques to identify the composition of Chinese and Korean glazes and to determine how the glazes were made is also reviewed. A technique for studying picogram sized samples under the SEM is described. This technique is presently being used to analyze substances present in the wood pulp of paper and other objects to help determine their authenticity. -- CAL
