Abstract
A compound obtained from an early Iron Age wood tar via Kugelrohr -distillation or extraction was identified as betulin by TLC. <sup>1</sup>H-and <sup>13</sup>C-NMR as well as by mass spectroscopy. This result validates the assumption that birch was used for the preparation of the archaeological wood tar found at the excavation in Stillfried a.d. March, Lower Austria.
