Describes and illustrates a 10-year fade test of three wood stains commonly used in restoring historic furniture: water stain (aniline dye), alcohol stain (aniline dye), and oil stain (burnt umber and burnt sienna oil colors in turpentine). Neither ultraviolet (UV) filters nor two coats of orange shellac protected the water or alcohol stains from marked fading. Recommends methods for controlling both UV radiation and visible light in rooms where historic furniture or finishes on structural wood are exposed.
