Abstract
Tests to show whethaer deteriorated masonry is a good candidate for consolidation, because early treatments actually accelerated decay. Samples taken for evaluation can be cores up to two inch diameter and eight inches long. Evaluate by: petrographic analysis; percent watersoluble;percent acid soluble; water absorption, initial and twenty-four hour; hygroscopic uptake; anions present, chloride, suphate, nitrate. Experimental consolidation. After cure, repeat some tests and estimate: proportion of consolidant deposited; depth of penetration; change in color; water-vapor transmission; compression strength; salt destruction. Finally, test in the field.
