Abstract
Although Beva 371 has been widely-used for some time as a lining adhesive, the published information on its use, with two exceptions using only limited testing, has included little quantitative information of the bond-strengths produced under different conditions, yet this knowledge is crucial if a reversible nap-bond is desired. The effect of temperature, thickness of adhesive layer, and other possible factors such as residual solvent and pre-sizing, were therefore examined, in simulated lining processes using linen canvas with an uncoated Polyester sailcloth lining fabric. Bond-strengths were determined following ASTM D903-49 testing procedures. In all cases, the desired nap-bond was achieved. It was proved that very small temperature differences could significantly change the strength of the bond produced, and that bond-strengths were highly dependent on both temperature and adhesive layer thickness, so that a lower temperature could be employed for the same bond-strength, if a thicker adhesive layer was applied.
