Abstract
As a part of New York City's Adopt-A-Monument campaign, a 19th century zinc fountain sculpture, the Neptune Fountain at Snug Harbor, Staten Island, New York, was examined. This paper gives a background to zinc cast sculpture, the corrosion of zinc and associated conservation concerns, and will discuss the results of the technical analysis of this sculpture by carious methods, including metallography, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and X-ray diffraction.
