The aim when consolidating damaged wood is to improve its mechanical properties as well as its resistance to changes in humidity and to biological attacks. This study deals with the consolidation of undamaged basswood samples by various consolidants. During impregnation at reduced pressure the content of the consolidants in the wood was found to increase with the content of the polar solvent. Radiation polymerization of methyl-methacrylate in wood was studied both on undamaged wood samples and on old damaged wood. The application of this technique on wood with polychromy and gilding is not recommended in cases when an oil binder is present; it is effective on wood without polychromy. -- AATA
