Abstract
Using the jaws of 106 known-aged male deer from the Kinki district and 25 deer of both sexes from Hokkaido, a method for determining the sex, age, and the death season (ancient hunting season) in the recovered remains of Sika deer from archaeological sites was investigated. Sex was determined by measuring the jaw depth, jaw area from P<sub>2</sub> to M<sub>2</sub>, and an index of the jaw depth in the known-sexed specimens. Age can be determined by studying the cervical lines of each molar, wear index, width of the occlusal surface, and the height of the crest and molar ratio. The study of the cement pads of M<sub>1</sub> or M<sub>2</sub> gave information on the exact age and death season of deer. -- AATA
