Abstract
A number of Islamic silver coins from about 270-360 After Hegira were analyzed by atomic absorption to characterize the composition of silver minted at towns in the Hindu Kush (Afghanistan) where mined silver was available. Coins from other Islamic mints were also analyzed. The Hindu Kush silver was characterized by very low gold contents (usually less than 0.01%) and often high bismuth (as high as 3%). One coin with a mint name of uncertain geographical location was deduced to have originated within the Hindu Kush region on the basis of its composition. -- AATA
