Abstract
Further specific gravity (SG) measurements on the gold coinage of Aksum are presented which substantiate the chronology previously arrived at and clarify the fineness of some individual rulers. In addition some of the coins were also analyzed by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) to check for the presence of copper since another analysis has claimed the presence of substantial amounts of this metal which would invalidate the gold content derived by SG. In fact, the XRF checks on the coins revealed that the copper contents are generally not higher than 1% and independent checks of the other method showed it to give unreliable results. The gold contents derived from the SG measurements are therefore vindicated. -- AATA
