Abstract
There is extensive data on the composition of the gold coinage of Aksum but little information for the silver and some kings may only have issued silver coins. The analyses of 33 silver coins and three copper coins are presented. Most coins were analyzed by a microchemical method, which has been found to give unreliable results for gold coins, and five coins were analyzed by proton activation. The results show some trends in fineness but a wide range in fineness for some kings. Most of the copper coins were leaded and contained small amounts of zinc, a metal also present in some of the base silver coins. -- AATA
