The lightfastness of handmade papers colored with a number of commonly used pigments was evaluated. Three test methods were used: exposure to sun through glass; exposure at a north-facing window; exposure to a daylight fluorescent lamp. As a result of the tests the pigments were categorized as excellent, good, fair, or unsatisfactory. Among those pigments to be classified as excellent were ultramarine, phthalocyanine blue and green, burnt umber, red and yellow iron oxide, and the Quinacridone reds at high concentration. Pigments classed as Unsatisfactory or fugitive included toluidine red and lithol red. -- AATA
