Abstract
185 examples of textile from the period indicated were investigated, the red dyes being identified by acid hydrolysis of the mordant, extraction, and thin layer chromatography. The following dyes were sought by the use of standard materials: madder, kermes, cochineal, Polish cochineal, brazil wood, redwood, lac dye, red sandal wood, sumach. The results are tabulated (on the thirteen double-sized pages) and plotted as chronological occurrences for the regions of Europe where the textiles originated. The illustrations are color photographs of TLC plates on standard size pages.
