Aluminum may not be a suitable construction material when handling certain alcohols, glycols, glycol monoethers, halogenated solvents, or even water which has a pH of less than 4 or greater than 8.5. This paper discusses the theoretical reactivity of the solvents, their mechanism of attack on aluminum, the role of inhibitors in preventing attack, and the circumstances that lead to attack. -- AATA
