An automatic laser beam welder has been developed for industrial use in joining cold rolled steel and is applicable to electrical and stainless steels. Because of the high energy density of the laser, welding results in a smaller heat affected zone that is not prone to brittle fracture because its microstructure and properties are the same as the parent metal. In addition, a smooth surface along the weld is achieved. -- AATA
