Abstract
Reports on 12 efflorescence salt samples from archaeological ceramics stored in wooden cabinets. The 12 samples were analyzed by neutron activation analysis (NAA) and eight were analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). The scope of the analysis was to determine the identity of these salts and the requirements for their formation. The relative humidity (RH) of the storage area was monitored for one year. Calclacite, calcium acetate chloride pentahydrate (Ca(CH<sub>3</sub>COO)Cl . 5H<sub>2</sub>O), was identified as the major phase in two of the samples and a minor phase in several of the others. Further investigation will comprise the analysis of numerous efflorescent salts as well as the host ceramic fabric from the ancient Agora collection by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD).
