Oil and bromoil processes, often called pigment processes, were preferred by pictorialists during the period 1905-ca. 1950. The basic image-forming process relies on the use of a dichromate matrix that accepts or rejects a greasy ink (usually applied with a brush) proportionally to the amount of light that the matrix has received.
