This document reviews four pigments and their inclusion in 17th and 18th century japanning techniques, vermilion, smalt, the green of vernis martin and lead white. Mention is made of a unique red 17th century cabinet completely decorated with designs from the original Stalker and Parker publication. Attention is drawn to the use of extenders in pigments, and the economic factor for the decorative artist, who will often require pigments in large quantities, and the need to take this into account when analysing pigment samples from the work of decorative artists.
