Abstract
The application of photon and proton activation analysis techniques to Ni, Fe, Cr, Ti, and Ca in stony meteorites is described in detail. The principles of activation analysis, the different kinds of activations, and procedures for determining induced activations are explained. The results of photon activation of Fe, Ni, Mg, Ca and Cr in a large number of stony meteorites are provided after a detailed discussion of the techniques used for this type of activation analysis. Next the activation procedures used to determine Fe, Ni, Ca, Ti and Cr by proton irradiation are described. Results of this method used on several meteorite samples are given. Following this, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of these two kinds of activation analysis is given. Comparisons with other types of activation are made. Cosmochemical conclusions from the results obtained in this study are presented along with a discussion of some theories of the origin and evolution of meteorites. A nearly constant ratio of Ca/Ti content was found for all stony meteorites.
