Abstract
The exterior walls of the White House were restored in 1980 and 1981 using Guide Specifications developed and reported by the National Bureau of Standards in NBSIR 80-2122, Development of Guide Specifications for the 1980 Exterior Restoration of the White House . Additional studies were carried following the restoration to assess the effectiveness of the procedures and materials used for the restoration and to develop maintenance guidelines for use by the National Park Service in establishing an effective maintenance program. This report presents: 1) the maintenance guidelines that were developed; 2) the findings of the periodic inspections of the exterior walls; 3) proposed revisons to the 1980 Guide Specifications; and 4) recommendations for future inspections.
