Abstract
This is the final paper in a 10-part series on furniture conservation. It summarizes the development of the furniture conservation profession and code of ethics. The most important aspects of wood technology are included as well as a summary of important aspects of furniture construction and primary causes of furniture deterioration. Suggestions for furniture preservation and care are given. Maintaining constant temperature and relative humidity at levels as close as possible to 45° F and 50per thousand respectively are the most critical factors for preservation of furniture. Eliminating all possible light (especially UV rays), dirt, air pollutants and insect infestations are also important. Handling of historic furniture should be kept to a minimum. To prevent deterioration great care should be taken in cleaning and polishing furniture. Many products traditionally used and currently advertised for furniture can actually cause damage over time. It is recommended that all oils be kept away from furniture. Paste waxes that contain only waxes and a solvent are acceptable but should only be applied every one to three years. Suggestions are made on when and how to choose a good conservator. This is the 10th in a 10-part series on furniture conservation.
