Abstract
The damage to furniture by light, contaminants and biopredation are described. The amount of damage caused by light is directly proportional to the energy level of the light (UV and x-rays being the most damaging), its intensity and the length of exposure. Thus direct sunlight (which contains UV rays) shinning on furniture for most of the day can do a tremendous amount of damage. Suggestions for reducing light intensity and filtering out the most damaging rays are given. Air contains sulfurous pollutants which can corrode the metal components of furniture. In addition air contains dirt which can hold moisture against the surface and/or abrade the wood and finish. Preventing the presence of these pollutants can be accomplished by the use of a proper filtering system. Of all the plants and animals that attack wood, brown rot fungi and wood-feeding insects do the most damage to furniture. Methods of controlling this type of biopredation are given. This is the 8th in a 10-part series on furniture conservation.
