Abstract
Faience material, although frequently associated only with the Near and Middle East, in fact, occurs in most areas of Asia, Africa, and Europe. It may not be a material which is often dealt with by conservators, but it can be found in any collection dealing with the archaeology of the ancient world. The problems encountered with faience very much depend on the manufacturing techniques, which include the efflorescence, cementation, and slurry methods. A knowledge of the method of manufacture is important for the understanding of the process(es) of deterioration of the glaze and core and for the adoption of suitable conservation methods and materials. Deterioration is attributed to dealkalization of the glaze, friability of the core, and the influence of soluble salts. Dry cleaning conservation materials which are suggested are Groomstick®, Wishab® sponges, and Draft Cleaner®. Paraloid B72, B67, and HMG (cellulose nitrate) adhesives are suggested for reconstruction. Paraloid B72 with Microballoons is recommended for gap filling. The question of salt removal is considered, and the adoption of dried distilled solvents of low water content is recommended to avoid the mobilization of soluble salts. These conservation materials for faience will change as new products are introduced and others fall from favor, but the principles of the approach to conservation will remain essentially the same. Faience is susceptible to changes in the environment, and conservation of this material has to include regular monitoring of the storage and display conditions to prevent further deterioration. -- AATA
