Documentation of the site known as Blossom's Ferry relies upon early public records. Archaeologists from the Program in Maritime History and Underwater Research at East Carolina University have investigated this site to learn about ferry and bridge operations in early American transportation history. On-site investigation recovered the design and construction data that the ferry remains preserved. The underwater conditions required special lighting for photographing the site. A 56-foot LCM, <i>Murphy Base</i>, was converted to serve as the base for the field operations. The procedures used in the site survey are described. Differences in the construction of the two boats are noted, confirming dates which had been determined from examination of the cargo of each of the ferries. Oak timbers provide structural evidence of one of the bridges built at the site; concentrations of ballast stone suggested the possiblity of the use of sunken cribs. -- AATA
