The 18th century Dutch-built <i>DeBraak</i> sank in the Delaware River in 1798. The rapid burial beneath silt and mud created an anaerobic condition that inhibited decay. The objects recovered since 1986 include telescopes, pistols, shoe pegs, firewood, joined furniture, and ship parts. The Winterthur Museum is identifying over 300 samples. The artifacts are kept submerged, and five methods of waterlogged wood conservation are being tested by a student. The objects are in remarkable condition; the hair from a wig is still pliable, and shoes are clearly unworn, worn or repaired and they still have laces. -- AATA
