Traditional methods of pottery-making in today's India are surveyed. Most pots are unglazed. Besides the coiled ware, pots thrown on the wheel are made on three main wheel types: a) traditional pottery wheel made of a wooden disc with a stone in the middle, b) stone wheel, made of solid sandstone slab and c) Kerala wheel (South India). In this part of India the male potter throws the clay and the woman potter turns the wheel. Large pots are completed by beating out the walls with a smooth stone. -- AATA
