The purpose of consolidation of stone is to make a deteriorated stone regain its original cohesion. It is not easy to measure the cohesion of stone quantitatively. The author tried to measure the cohesion of stones treated by impregnation with synthetic resins (acrylic, epoxy & silane) by a split test. As for the sound soft tuff used for the test, its splitting tensile strength was not improved so much by the consolidation treatment. Had a deteriorated stone been used instead, its splitting tensile strength may have been improved quite significantly. However because it is quite difficult to obtain a standard decayed stone, this test remains to be undertaken in the future. -- AATA
