The old Islamic book in codex form differs from the Western codex in some characteristic details in the structure of the binding. In the article, the classical techniques of the sewing and weaving of the endbands are examined, reconstructed and checked. Both these procedures are closely connected. The Islamic endbands are classified with flat weaves of which the weft threads form rows of slanting stitches. The construction of the Islamic binding requires that the book is opened at an obtuse angle. When the book is used or exhibited, a cradle-shaped support would be appropriate, rather than a horizontal base.
