Concerns the recent contribution by Catling and Jones to the series of composition and provenance studies of Mycenaean and Minoan pottery. In their study Catling and Jones conclude that their results provide strong evidence that a number of the inscribed stirrupjars found at Thebes have a west Cretan origin as an alternative to the east Cretan origin onginally suggested by Catling and Millett (1965). The purpose of this article is to point out certain inconsistencies in the earlier study that have not been satisfactorily resolved, and, in addition, to draw attention to certain new problems that emerge in the latest publication. -- AATA
