Abstract
The mechanisms of glass deterioration through its interaction with atmospheric water have been studied. Replica glass samples representing unstable high alkali/low lime glass compositions have been fabricated and aged under essentially ambient conditions. The chemical and physical changes brought about in the surfaces of replica glass samples as a result of increasing time, temperature and concentration of atmospheric water have been monitored using secondary ion mass spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy. Recommendations concerning display, storage and cleaning of glass vessels have been given in the light of the results obtained.
