Abstract
Wyoming molasse sandstone was deteriorated by cyclic loading with sodium sulfate and then treated with various consolidants. Alkoxysilanes did not provide requisite wet strength to allow salt removal by water immersion. Treatment with Acryloid B72 solutions provided sufficient wet strength for samples (5x5x5 cm) only at a concentration of 25 percent (w/v). Treatment with both 10 percent and 25 percent solutions of an epoxy provided requisite wet strength and allowed almost complete salt removal. The comparative performance of preconsolidation was found to follow the same trend, whether the amount of salt removed was estimated by quantitative determination of salt removed in immersion baths or by destruction of desalinated samples and mapping of the salt present within a section of the sample.
