Abstract
Stylistic differences, i.e., fracture characterizations, in stone implements are important indicators of time period and geographic location. In researching the technology of primitive manufacturing processes, it is necessary to determine the purpose of the tools, e.g., pounding, scraping, cutting, and piercing, and to classify stone implements by type, date, use, and place of origin. Stone tool typology and stone working technology are discussed. Technical analyses used to determine age and origin of Florida chert implements include chemical analyses, particle-induced x-ray emission analysis, neutron activation analysis, thermal alteration, thermoluminescence analysis, weathering studies, infrared reflection spectroscopy, and petrography; each of these is explained.
