Abstract
An illustrated book, written about 1801 as briefing material for visitors to the Sumitomo Company, covers mining, smelting, refining, and casting of copper along with extraction of silver by the use of lead and the production of shirome (an arsenical speiss). The particularly Japanese method of casting copper underwater mentioned here gave copper ingots with a beautiful, tarnish-resistant, thin, pink oxide layer. -- AATA
