Abstract
Cyclic voltammetry of clean iron in alkaline aqueous media has shown that the series of anodic and cathodic peaks can be interpreted to provide evidence for the formation of a hydrous oxide film. The authors conclude that the primary passivating process for dissolution of iron in aqueous media is the formation of a layer of a compact anhydrous Fe(II) oxide or hydroxide, possibly a mixture of these two. -- AATA
