The historical role played by Ernst Abbe in the development of construction methods and in the evaluation of optical systems is examined. This work set a precedent for pure research in the field of technical optics. Various optical instruments are described: microscopes, focometers, drawing equipment, apertometers, refractometers. These instruments are in the collection of the Polytechnical Museum in Moscow. -- AATA
