Abstract
Identification methods used for the study of oil paintings are summarized, especially with regard to the detection of forgeries. These include: x-rays, ultraviolet and infrared photography, and microscopic examination. Newer methods are: measurement of the natural radioactivity of white lead, identification of proteinous media by immunological methods, and gas chromatography.
