During the restoration of David and Bathsheba in the National Historical Museum in Frederiksborg Castle, a signature G.E.F. was found. On the back of the original canvas, an inventory number: No. 12.G.S. was found. The artist has been identified as the Hamburg painter Gabriel Engel. It was delivered to the Gottorp Castle in 1649, and was later transferred to the Frederiksborg Castle. The painting was relined with an interleaf of Vliseline 135 and an adhesive of wax and AW2 resin. It was cleaned with a mixture of alcohol and turpentine. Some old overpainting was removed with a mixture of 200 parts methylene chloride, 75 parts acetone, 75 parts alcohol, 75 parts cyclohexanene, and 75 parts benzene. The painting was inpainted with reduced oil paint, and varnished with N-ketone dissolved in vanolin (white spirit). -- AATA
